UN says 'deliberate' choices 'systematically' depriving Gazans
UN: Gazans killed seeking food due to 'deliberate choices'. Aid group shuts Gaza sites after deadly shootings. UN urges full aid access, calls current flow a 'trickle'. The UN aid chief said on Wednesday that recent 'horrifying scenes' of Gazans being killed while seeking food aid were the result of 'deliberate choices that have systematically deprived' them of essentials to survive. A US and Israeli-backed group operating aid sites in the Gaza Strip announced the temporary closure of its facilities on Wednesday, with the Israeli army warning that roads leading to distribution centres were 'considered combat zones'. The announcement by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) follows a string of deadly incidents near the distribution sites it operates. On Tuesday, 27 people were killed in southern Gaza when Israeli troops opened fire near a GHF aid site, with the military saying the incident was under investigation. 'The world is watching, day after day, horrifying scenes of Palestinians being shot, wounded or killed in Gaza while simply trying to eat,' UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said in a statement. READ | Gaza aid centres close and 'are considered combat zones' after Israel fire killed 27 'Emergency medical teams have confirmed treating hundreds of trauma cases. Yesterday alone, dozens were declared dead at hospitals after Israeli forces said they had opened fire. 'This is the outcome of a series of deliberate choices that have systematically deprived two million people of the essentials they need to survive.' He echoed the call by UN chief Antonio Guterres for immediate independent investigations, saying they were not isolated incidents, and the perpetrators must be held accountable. No one should have to risk their life to feed their children. Tom Fletcher The GHF began operations a week ago, but the UN and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with it over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. Meanwhile, the United Nations has described the amount of aid allowed into Gaza, after Israel partially lifted a more than two-month total blockade, as a trickle. 'We must be allowed to do our jobs: we have the teams, the plan, the supplies and the experience,' said Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. 'Open the crossings - all of them. Let in life-saving aid at scale from all directions. Lift the restrictions on what and how much aid we can bring in. 'Ensure our convoys aren't held up by delays and denials. Release the hostages. Implement the ceasefire.'

RCB Event Tragedy Stirs Online Chatter On Bengaluru Vs Mumbai Crowd Control, BJP Joins Debate
Last Updated: Social media users criticized crowd management in Bengaluru after a stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory parade left 11 dead, comparing it to Mumbai's success. As scenes from the stampede at Royal Challengers Bangalore's victory parade continue to circulate, social media is abuzz with comparisons between crowd management in Bengaluru and Mumbai. Several users questioned how Mumbai, which hosted large crowds during Team India's World Cup celebrations, avoided a similar tragedy. 'Today I realised Mumbai handled a ten times bigger crowd than Bengaluru and no innocent life was lost," wrote one user, tagging the Mumbai Police with salute and folded hands emojis. 'We all should value life. No game celebration is bigger than our lives." Another user echoed the sentiment, asking, 'How did Mumbai manage celebrations five times without any mishap, while Bengaluru couldn't handle even one?" The post blamed the Karnataka Congress government, district administration and police for the stampede, calling it a 'complete failure" in governance. How did Mumbai managed the celebration 5 times without any mishap while Bengaluru couldn't manage a single celebration . This is complete failure of the Karnataka Congress govt and the #Bengaluru district administration and police. Also , the public should be equally blamed ,… — Amitabh Chaudhary (@MithilaWaala) June 4, 2025 A third user struck a more critical note, saying that 'the public should be equally blamed" for turning up in such numbers for 'a fixed tournament." The user added: 'This was no Olympic or national achievement, just a franchise league where players, owners and betters make crores." Another post drew a broader connection to social frustration, saying, 'While unemployment played a role in the Mumbai celebration, the tragic Bengaluru stampede has left many questioning accountability. Despite the devastating loss of lives, no one has stepped forward to take responsibility." Not a single life lost during the Mumbai T20 WC victory parade — and the crowd was nearly 5x bigger than in happened at the RCB celebration wasn't a tragedy,It was a clear failure of planning #RCB #Stampede #chinnaswamystadium #RCBvPBKS #ViratKohli???? — Bikram (@honestvikram) June 4, 2025 A third user criticised the public's role, saying that 'the public should be equally blamed" for attending in such numbers for 'a fixed tournament." The user added: 'This was no Olympic or national achievement, just a franchise league where players, owners and bettors make crores." Another post linked the incident to broader social frustration: 'While unemployment played a role in the Mumbai celebration, the tragic Bengaluru stampede has left many questioning accountability. Despite the devastating loss of lives, no one has stepped forward to take responsibility." Amid the online outrage, the BJP criticised the state government, accusing them of hastily organising the event without adequate police deployment or planning. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday slammed the Karnataka government for alleged mismanagement of RCB's IPL victory parade, after a stampede-like situation near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium left eleven people dead and dozens injured. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra said the event lacked adequate preparation and police deployment. 'The state government, without any preparedness, should not have organised this today," he told reporters. 'If you saw the World Cup celebrations in Mumbai, it was planned with proper arrangements. Lakhs celebrated in Bengaluru last night. Why hold another event so soon and without preparation?" Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, echoed the criticism, drawing comparisons with other Indian cities. 'It is very saddening. Cities like Mumbai and Kolkata also celebrated their teams' victories, but what are we seeing here in Bengaluru?" Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed eleven deaths and thirty-three injuries. 'More than two to three lakh people came. No one expected this much crowd," he said during a press conference. He announced a magisterial inquiry and ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the crowd overwhelmed security. 'They broke the gates. A lot of stampeding occurred," he said. 'We cancelled the procession from the airport and from Vidhana Soudha due to the overwhelming crowd and rain. Even at the stadium, we instructed the organisers to wind up the event in ten to fifteen minutes." He said the venue's capacity was 35,000, but over two lakh people attended. CJI Gavai Flags Concerns Over Post-Retirement Jobs Taken By Judges: 'I Pledged Not To Accept...'
Last Updated: The CJI's remarks come in the backdrop of Justice Yashwant Varma facing allegations of corruption after the discovery of a large amount of cash from his official residence in Delhi Chief Justice of India B R Gavai has said instances of corruption and misconduct in the judiciary have a negative impact on public confidence. The CJI also raised 'ethical concerns" while she was speaking about post-retirement jobs taken by judges. The CJI's remarks come in the backdrop of Allahabad High Court's Justice Yashwant Varma facing allegations of corruption after the discovery of a large amount of cash from his official residence in Delhi. Speaking at a roundtable conference in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on 'Maintaining Judicial Legitimacy and Public Confidence", the CJI said whenever these instances of corruption and misconduct have come to light, the Supreme Court has consistently taken immediate and appropriate measures to address the misconduct. CJI Gavai said in every democracy, the judiciary must not only dispense justice, but also be seen as an institution that deserves to hold truth to power and the terms 'judicial legitimacy" and 'public confidence" are interconnected. 'Legitimacy and public confidence are not secured through coercion of command but through the credibility earned by courts. Any erosion of this confidence risks weakening the judiciary's constitutional role as the ultimate arbiter of rights. Transparency and accountability are democratic virtues," CJI Gavai said. Dealing with the often debated issue of post-retirement jobs taken by judges, he said the timing and nature of such post-retirement engagements could undermine the public's trust in the judiciary's integrity, as it could create a perception that judicial decisions were influenced by the prospect of future government appointments or political involvement. 'Another point of discussion is post-retirement jobs taken by judges. In India, judges are subject to a fixed retirement age. If a judge takes up another appointment with the government immediately after retirement or resigns from the bench to contest elections, it raises significant ethical concerns and invites public scrutiny," he said. The CJI said if a judge takes up another appointment with the government immediately after retirement, or resigns from the bench to contest elections, it raises 'significant ethical concerns and invites public scrutiny". 'In light of this, many of my colleagues and I have publicly pledged not to accept any post-retirement roles or positions from the government. This commitment is an effort to preserve the credibility and independence of the judiciary," CJI Gavai said. Last year, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha election. He secured victory from the Tamluk seat in West Bengal. Three months after he retired as Madhya Pradesh High Court judge, Rohit Arya had officially joined the BJP. Corruption Allegations Against Justice Varma A fire incident at Justice Varma's residence in the national capital in March, when he was a judge at the Delhi High Court, had led to the discovery of several burnt sacks of cash at the outhouse. Though the judge claimed ignorance about the cash, the Supreme Court-appointed committee indicted him after speaking to a number of witnesses and recording his statement. The then CJI Khanna is believed to have prodded him to resign but Justice Varma dug in his heels. The apex court has since transferred him to his parent cadre, the Allahabad High Court, where he has not been assigned any judicial work. Justice Khanna had written to the president and the prime minister, recommending the impeachment motion, which is the procedure for axing members of the higher judiciary from service. Meanwhile, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the government is determined to take all political parties on board in moving an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, saying corruption in the judiciary cannot be approached through a 'political prism". He said the government wants the exercise aimed at axing Justice Varma, embroiled in a case of alleged corruption and indicted by a Supreme Court-appointed committee, a 'collaborative effort".
